One of New Zealand’s most prolific and successful directors and comedians, Taika Waititi kicked off his career with the romantic comedy “Eagle vs Shark” (2007), starring his frequent collaborator Jemaine Clement. The pair also worked together on the cult comedy series “Flight of the Conchords” (2007–2009), which Waititi wrote and directed four episodes of. He went on to write and direct a slew of independent comedies such as “Boy” (2010), the mockumentary movie “What We Do in the Shadows” (2014), and “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” (2016). Waititi had his breakthrough international hit when he was picked to direct “Thor: Ragnarok” (2017), bringing a unique multicolored vision to the MCU, which he continued in the sequel “Thor: Love and Thunder” (2022). Between these superhero efforts, he wrote and directed “Jojo Rabbit” (2019), winning an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. He turned his focus back to the small screen by writing and executive producing “What We Do In The Shadows” (2019–2024) and turning it into a six-season success with FX. He directed and starred in “Our Flag Means Death” (2022–2023) and was co-creator and director of “Time Bandits” (2024). Adapting a little-known documentary of the same name, Waititi wrote and directed “Next Goal Wins” (2023), a sports comedy about the American Samoa national soccer team with Michael Fassbender in the lead role. Always keen to adapt existing works into hit movies, Waititi turned his attention to a novel by Kazuo Ishiguro for his movie “Klara and the Sun” (2026) with a stellar cast including Jenna Ortega, Amy Adams, and Steve Buscemi.
